A History of Service

Join to learn, engage to grow.

In April 1981, Women in Defense (WID) was established as a volunteer organization by 12 women who sought to provide professional development and networking opportunities for women working within the national defense community. Since then, WID has incorporated as a 501(c), affiliated with the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), established the HORIZONS foundation, and awarded more than 100 HORIZONS scholarships to women pursuing careers in national defense/security. Today, WID has more than 4,000 members and 20 chapters supporting women who serve our national security mission.
